Manifest Equality

March 9, 2010

I got to check out the Manifest Equality Art show on Vine last week.

The MANIFEST EQUALITY Gallery gathers together a diverse array of hundreds of the nation’s most talented visual artists under one roof to celebrate that role and join with our gay (LGBT) friends, family members and co-workers to demand full and equal rights for all Americans.

Peep some of the photos I snapped:

Shepard Fairey: Defend Equality, Love Unites

Robbie Conal: Freedom From Choice

Patrick Martinez: Thugs Eat Ice Cream

Curtis Kulig: Love Me

To view the complete gallery, go here.

Very, very dope.

How Many Billboards?

February 28, 2010

If you guys are wondering about all the random billboards that aren’t ads, but art pieces, this is an exhibition that the MAK Center for Art and Architecture is putting on.

The philosophical proposition of the exhibition is simple: art should occupy a visible position in the cacophony of mediated images in the city, and it should do so without merely adding to the visual noise. How Many Billboards? Art In Stead proposes that art periodically displace advertisement in the urban environment.

I caught some pics while driving today down La Brea to our shithole of a studio. Just kidding, it’s sexier than Fabio’s hair after he steps out the shower.  But the point is, let’s see who can spot all 21 billboards first.  Winner gets a massive make-out sesh.  With me.

The cloudy sky billboard above is from the lovely artist Kerry Tribe.

Below is from photographer James Welling.

Don’t thank me for the high quality photos, thank Blackberry.

Anthony Ausgang Bugs Out w/ MGMT

February 17, 2010

Anthony Ausgang is doing the artwork for MGMT’s album Congratulations.

His “lowbrow art” is creating thick looney tune-like nostalgia, except a little more disturbing and slightly more perverted.

Real dope.

Peep the article at BoingBoing.

Everyone’s a Zombie: Rezatron

August 3, 2009

Rezatron is my new favorite artist.   The “Kanye Death” piece above says it all.

The perfect blend of Zombies + Pop Culture + Doodles.  Totally havin’ it.

Peep his site to see Vomit the Frog, Fright of the Conchords, and Scare Jordan.

I wonder if he’ll create the Old Bones album cover.

David Choe | “Cursive”

April 12, 2009

dryhumping-rulesI dig Giant Robot. I stopped by their Sawtelle location(s) recently and stumbled upon David Choe‘s book of sketches, “Cursive” (only $12). I thought I’d look at a few pages and move on, but I flipped through the whole goddamn thing. The sketch above labeled “Dry Humping Rules” is just one snippet of how this dude gets down.

With a dirty art style, he does comics, paints, and even spray paints stupid fat whales talking shit…His illustrations for porno mags are gross and his writings are equally perverted

n o a.

She has been documenting New Kingdom shows since the beginning.

One of the illest photographers on the planet, she captures the counter cultures of the world and it’s depths that people rarely seek.

Love this girl to death.

Check out her website that launched today

Go ahead, dive in, get your hair wet.

A Recap: MC Joaquin Phoenix

January 28, 2009

This fucking guy.  So now they’re saying it’s all a hoax and that he was planning this “art project” where he documents himself as a retired actor turned rapper and that Diddy and Casey Affleck were both in on it.

Maaaaaaaaaaaaan, if this is a hoax, it would’ve been much doper to not reveal it until the “art project” was done.

That face…

Under The Influence: Beastie Boys

January 5, 2009

under-influence-beastie-boys-4One of hip-hop’s greatest groups, the Beastie Boys, will be showcasing their art and tributes from other great artists at Gallery1988 on January 8th, of course I gotta get there a litle early since we’ve got a little contractual obligation with the House of Blues. All three members will on tap that evening for signatures and high fives.

Artist Pick: Legomania with Nathan Sawaya

October 29, 2008

After reading about “The Brick Artist” Nathan Sawaya, I immediately took a trip to my garage and dug through about 15 boxes just to find my old Lego collection.  This dude is brilliant and completely innovative with Lego sculptures ranging from the Statue of Liberty holding a light saber to a life size Stephen Colbert.  His art is in museums across the nation, including of course, Legoland in Carlsbad, CA.  His website is definitely worth checking out, and make sure to VOTE for what you’d like Nathan to build next.  Voting ends on November 4th, so hurry up and get some ideas cracking and see what he comes up with.  My vote…a lifesize Lil’ Wayne, face tattoos included, pants sagging, platinum grill.
