Karate Kid 2010 Actually Looks Dope

March 5, 2010

“Put the jacket on, take the jacket off”… I love it.

I must say, I thought this was gonna be cheesy and watered down, but from this trailer, it looks like it could be pretty fun to watch.

I mean, the kids are a little young so you know that their punches really don’t hurt.  No question Johnny Lawrence would destroy everyone in this film, but still, I’m gonna give it a fair chance.

Now, let’s go a little back in time just for shits and shitstains.

Banksy vs. Robbo

March 4, 2010

The street art battle is getting real thick.

Robbo, an orginator and pioneer of street art.  A legend in England.

Banksy, you know the dealz.

Simply, Banksy covered up a 25 year old classic Robbo piece on a canal wall under a bridge.  The piece which once read ROBBO INC. was now banksified below.

Robbo then stepped out of retirement at 40 yrs old to regain his legacy.

Peep the Wall Street Journal article for more crazy pics.  I wish I was there to throw a few RIFF 89’s in the mix.

From South Philly Where The Hammers are Clapped

March 3, 2010

Haven’t seen The Roots perform in a while, aside from the little Fallon shizen they do.

Reminds me of the good ol’ Okayplayer days.  And beer.  It’s actually kinda weird to think that The Roots make me feel nostalgic to the point where I want to cut my hair into a short spikey fade and live a life as a Okayplayer message board junky.

Whateverz,  great way to end the Winter Olympics.

I miss Hub.

The Streets Giveth and The Streets Taketh Away

March 2, 2010

This Fox News clip just came out with Philip Lumbang and his battle to save his Silverlake Mural.

To help save this mural, you can go to the Abztract site and purchase “THE MURAL”.

Crazy shize.

Gorillaz, Mos Def, Bobby Womack, Bruce Willis: Stylo

I want to get Bruce Willis’s face tattooed on my outer left bicep.

How Many Billboards?

February 28, 2010

If you guys are wondering about all the random billboards that aren’t ads, but art pieces, this is an exhibition that the MAK Center for Art and Architecture is putting on.

The philosophical proposition of the exhibition is simple: art should occupy a visible position in the cacophony of mediated images in the city, and it should do so without merely adding to the visual noise. How Many Billboards? Art In Stead proposes that art periodically displace advertisement in the urban environment.

I caught some pics while driving today down La Brea to our shithole of a studio. Just kidding, it’s sexier than Fabio’s hair after he steps out the shower.  But the point is, let’s see who can spot all 21 billboards first.  Winner gets a massive make-out sesh.  With me.

The cloudy sky billboard above is from the lovely artist Kerry Tribe.

Below is from photographer James Welling.

Don’t thank me for the high quality photos, thank Blackberry.

Anthony Ausgang Bugs Out w/ MGMT

February 17, 2010

Anthony Ausgang is doing the artwork for MGMT’s album Congratulations.

His “lowbrow art” is creating thick looney tune-like nostalgia, except a little more disturbing and slightly more perverted.

Real dope.

Peep the article at BoingBoing.

“Bad” Mural in Brooklyn

February 17, 2010

I was wondering when they were gonna do this.

The Downtown Brooklyn Partnership negotiated an agreement to create a mural of the late King of Pop at the entrance of the Hoyt-Schermerhorn train station.

The location holds special significance because the Hoyt-Schemerhorn station is where director Martin Scorsese directed Jackson in the iconic 1987 music video “Bad.”

Just another reason to take a band trip to nyc.

This is definitely an oldie but goodie.  I saw this awhile back and then just saw it on DJ Skeet Skeet’s blog and started cracking up.  Amazing.

Things to look for:

1. Their decked out belts

3. The one stringed bass thrash

4. The keytar

5. The ill ass jean vests.

6. Leonardo’s microphone foot swoop (1:21) and his sumo move (1:50)

7. The double shot of  sunglass-bro fist pumping.

8. The crotch area of the shells look like giant vaginas.

Greatest job in the world.

Bad Brains Documentary Out Soon

February 4, 2010

It’s crazy to see this band still relevant and influential 30 years later.

BAD BRAINS has announced that it is in the final stages of production for its acclaimed documentary. No release date has been set yet.

The yet-untitled film was directed by Mandy Stein and Ben Logan and traces the history of the band from their formation in Washington, D.C. in 1979 to the present day. In addition to tons of footage from the band’s vault, the movie includes interviews with all four members (vocalist HR, guitarist Dr. Know, bassist Darryl Jenifer and drummer Earl Hudson) and their manager Anthony Countey, as well as testimonials from Henry Rollins, ex-Minor Threat and Fugazi vocalist Ian MacKaye, ex-Minor Threat guitarist Lyle Preslar, ex-Cro Mags vocalist Jon Joseph and guitarist Harley Flanagan, Murphys Law guitarist Jimmy Gestapo and Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch, who produced Bad Brains 2007 album Build a Nation.

In addition to giving birth to the hardcore movement with their song “Pay to Cum” and inspiring all of the aforementioned musicians in the process, the Bad Brains had a huge influence on a new breed of late ‘80 and early ’90s metal bands, including Living Colour, Faith No More, 24-7 Spyz and Fishbone. While the Bad Brains flick is currently in post-production, it will be ready for release in a Jamaican minute.

Kinda looks like Mr. Monopoly with a full head of hair.

Take Notes

February 4, 2010

Fast forward to 40 sec.  The only dance move I enjoy more than the Robot is the “Club Grind”.

February 2, 2010

I love Skullphone’s work as I see it pop up more and more thorughout LA.  Any of you ever seen the electronic billboard he hacked into last year?

This piece is on the corner Vine and Selma (just a bit west on Selma).

Definitely would like to cross paths with this dude one day.
